I am proud to announce that yesterday a Report prepared by the Commission, Living Well: Putting people at the centre of mental health reform in NSW: A Report, was tabled in Parliament. A PDF of the Report is now available on the Commission’s website, along with videos and photos of those who shared their stories with us.

This Report presents the case for reform, told from the perspectives of people living with mental illness (consumers), their families and carers, and the front-line workers who support them. It draws on the wide-ranging consultation the Commission undertook across the state, where we listened to those people with first-hand knowledge and experience to get to the heart of how our system responds now and to develop ideas for how we could improve it.

Our consultations included Aboriginal people – for whom healing through culture resonates deeply – as well as people living in metropolitan and rural and regional areas, children and adults, and people from diverse cultures and groups who bring all manner of life experiences to this document.

The Report was developed as a companion document to the Strategic Plan, Living Well: A Strategic Plan for Mental Health in NSW 2014 – 2024. The Plan sets an ambitious agenda for system reform over the coming decade, and sets actions to take NSW through the first phase of those reforms. It was delivered to the Hon. Jillian Skinner MP, NSW Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research, and the Hon. Jai Rowell MP, Minister for Mental Health and Assistant Minister for Health, on 5 May 2014 and remains under consideration by the Government. The Commission is hopeful that the Plan will be released by Government in the near future.

When the Plan is made public, it will be available on the Commission’s website together with written documents such as reports and submissions that informed the development of the Plan.
